Craft and Structure
RI.1.5    Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text.

 

RI. 1.6        Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and    information provided by the words in a text.

 

RI.1.7    Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.

 

Reading Standards: Foundational Skills
Phonological Awareness
RF.1.2    Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
c.    Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
d.    Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).

 

Phonics and Word Recognition
RF.1.3    Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
b.     Deode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

  • How do illustrations and text features help you to recall information and understand the text?

  • How do the words and the pictures help you understand what the author has written?

  • What is your main topic and what are your supporting facts on that topic? How does knowing this help you understand the book?

  • How does correct use of grammar and punctuation help a reader understand your writing?

  • Can you group these words (cow, horse, duck, chicken, and goat)? Can you tell me why you grouped these words this way?
